A stabilized finite element method using a discontinuous level set approach for solving two phase incompressible flows

چکیده
A numerical method for the simulation of three-dimensional incompressible twophase flows is presented. The proposed algorithm combines an implicit pressure stabilized finite element method for the solution of incompressible two-phase flow problems with a level set method implemented with a quadrature-free Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method [1]. The use of a fast contouring algorithm [2] permits us to localize the interface accurately. By doing so, we can compute the discontinuous integrals without neither introducing an interface thickness nor reinitializing the level set. The capability of the resulting algorithm is demonstrated with ”large scale” numerical examples (free surface flows : dam break, sloshing) and ”small scale” ones (two phase Poiseuille, Rayleigh-Taylor instability).

In this study, we present a numerical solution for the two-phase incompressible flow in the porous media under isothermal condition using a hybrid of the linear lower-order nonconforming finite element and the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. This hybridization is developed for the first time in the two-phase modeling and considered as the main novelty of this research. The p...
متن کاملA stabilized finite element method using a discontinuous level set approach for the computation of bubble dynamics
A novel numerical method for solving three-dimensional two phase flow problems is presented. This method combines a quadrature free discontinuous Galerkin method for the level set equation with a pressure stabilized finite element method for the Navier Stokes equations. The main challenge in the computation of such flows is the accurate evaluation of surface tension forces. This involves the co...
متن کاملA finite element based level set method for two-phase incompressible flows
We present a method that has been developed for the efficient numerical simulation of two-phase incompressible flows. For capturing the interface between the phases the level set technique is applied. The continuous model consists of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations coupled with an advection equation for the level set function. The effect of surface tension is modeled by a localized f...

The resulting diffusion equation which updates the level set function and optimization ...

This paper presents a stabilized finite element method for the three dimensional computation of incompressible bubble dynamics using a level set method. The interface between the two phases is resolved using the level set approach developed by Sethian [Level Set Methods and Fast Marching Methods, Cambridge University Press, 1999], Sussman et al. [J. Comput. Phys. 114 (1994) 146], and Sussman et...
